A striking ensemble of theatres and gallery spaces designed by Hassell Architects, the Adelaide Festival Centre sits on a 45-degree angle to the city grid between Elder Park and Parliament House. Its two white geometric dome roofs dominate the skyline and signal a bold commitment to cultural infrastructure when few Australian cities possessed comparable facilities.
History
Built in the early 1970s, the Festival Theatre opened in June 1973, with the rest of the complex and Festival Plaza following shortly after. The project required the demolition of several historic buildings to clear the site.
From 2016 onwards, extensive redevelopment of external spaces transformed the precinct. A new car park, plaza area, and Festival Tower office building were completed by 2024, with Festival Tower Two commencing construction in early 2026. The theatres and internal spaces underwent major upgrading and refurbishment in late 2025, reopening for the Adelaide Festival in late February 2026. Overall external redevelopment is expected to conclude in 2028.
