Ortigia is the toponym of the island which constitutes the oldest part of the city of Syracuse.
Its name derives from the ancient Greek ortyx which means "quail".
It is flanked to the east by some rocks, including a larger but almost entirely submerged one historically known as the Isle of Dogs.
