Hakone Open-Air Museum was the first open-air sculpture museum opened in Japan, in 1969 in the Ashigarashimo district of Kanagawa prefecture.

Over an area of 70 hectares, partly with indoor buildings, more than a thousand works by Japanese and Western artists from the 19th and 20th centuries are exhibited.

In 1984 the Picasso Pavilion was opened to house 300 works by the artist. Equally important is the section dedicated to Henry Moore, with his 36 works.
