Castel Thun

Castel Thun is a monumental building of medieval origin, among the best preserved in Trentino and always intended as the main seat of the powerful family of the Thun counts. It is located in the municipal area of Ton, in Val di Non. From Saturday 17 April 2010, after 6pm years of restoration work, Castel Thun can be visited by the public.

The castle was originally called Castel Belvesino, from the name of the hill on which it was built. It then took the name of the titular family, the Tonos. They Germanized the surname to Thun. It was damaged several times by fires - during one of which, in 1569, Sigismondo Thun, imperial orator at the Council of Trent, lost his life.
