Visions of Alvar Aalto: Finlandia Hall’s permanent exhibition in the former rehearsal rooms — Helsinki

04 June 2025 — 31 December 2026
Finlandia HallNational Library of Finland

Finlandia Hall, the building Alvar Aalto designed for Helsinki on the edge of Töölö Bay, has since June 2025 held a permanent exhibition about its own architect. Visions of Alvar Aalto – Finlandia Exhibition opened on 4 June 2025 in the rooms where symphony orchestras once rehearsed, and it tells the story of Alvar, Aino and Elissa Aalto together with the history of Finland and the country’s relationship with its forests.

The exhibition is laid out as five spaces across 1,300 square metres. Prelude introduces the Finlandia hymn and its origin; Power of light is about light, space and well-being in Aalto’s designs; Land of forests follows wood and Finnish nature through his architecture and furniture; Together maps his networks and international relations; and MyAalto is an interactive room where visitors try out ideas of their own. The exhibition design is by Taina Väisänen, the script by Kirsti Manninen, and the producer is Finlandia-talo Oy, the hall’s own company. A multilingual virtual guide is available, and the entrance is accessible.

It is a different thing from the temporary show in the foyer, Alvar Aalto & Contemporary Spanish Architecture, free to enter until 10 January 2027. That one is about Aalto’s influence abroad; this one is about the man, the two women he worked with, and the country. Seen on the same visit, the two give an unusually complete account.
