The First Goetheanum Burns (1922)

On the night of 31 December 1922, the first Goetheanum — Rudolf Steiner’s extraordinary twin-domed building of wood at Dornach — was destroyed by an arson fire. Within days Steiner had conceived a successor in a material that could not burn, and the second Goetheanum rose in sculptural cast concrete between 1925 and 1928.
