Static Cinema 2026 — San Pietro Cantieri del Contemporaneo, Venice

Static Cinema returns to Venice for its second edition — and inaugurates a new venue with it. From 3 to 24 September 2026, during the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, the photography exhibition curated by ART-ICON opens San Pietro — Cantieri del Contemporaneo, the new contemporary-art hall at Campo San Pietro, Castello 71, run by the team behind CREA on the Giudecca. The vernissage is on Thursday 3 September at 6:30 pm.

The project explores the border between still and moving images: cinema built from fixed instants, photography carrying movement, a before and an after, inside a single frame. ART-ICON — the curatorial platform founded and directed by artist Danila Tkachenko and curator Slavica Veselinović — assembles established names and a younger generation across documentary and street photography, staged photography, portraiture and cinematic imagery.

Among the participants: Nick Zinner, guitarist of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with photographs from his life on the road; Julia Fullerton-Batten (MC2 Gallery), with her staged, cinematic tableaux; Venetian photographer Graziano Arici, whose decades-long archive of the city’s film world is represented by his portrait of Claudia Cardinale; Bernis von zur Muehlen, with an American archive work from the 1970s; Lindsay Elizabeth Warner, including portraits of Marilyn Manson; Natalie Curtis, daughter of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis, with a 2015 image from The White Hotel in Manchester; Yung-Hsiang Chou and David Allan Brandt. Lars von Trier is present with frames extracted from his films and shown as autonomous images; the organisers’ programme also lists Megan Davis, Alexey Morosov, Jacques Boumendil — with a 1971 portrait of Roger Waters and Pink Floyd — Kristin Gallegos and ±KOMMA.
