William Wyler shot Roman Holiday (1953) on location in Rome, and its most enduring image is Audrey Hepburn’s runaway princess eating a gelato on the Spanish Steps. The eighteenth-century staircase, climbing from Piazza di Spagna to the church of Trinità dei Monti, became overnight one of the most romantic addresses in cinema.
