The rioni of Rome: Rione XIV, from Borgo to Castel Sant’Angelo

Rome is divided into 22 rioni, each tracing one of the city’s Augustan regiones, and each with its own particular wonders. This guided walk explored Rione Borgo — the area around the Vatican, often overlooked by visitors whose attention is entirely taken by St Peter’s Basilica, even though a whole parallel world sits just around it.

The route began at the church of Santo Spirito in Sassia, crossed St Peter’s Square to take in details easily missed in a hurry, continued into the small circular church of Porta Sant’Anna in the Vatican, through the Leonine Walls, and on into the heart of Borgo Pio, ending at the papal fortress of Castel Sant’Angelo.
