Abuna Messias, directed by Goffredo Alessandrini, reached Italian cinemas on 31 August 1939. It won the Coppa Mussolini for best Italian film at that year’s Venice Mostra, the last edition held at the Lido before the war — the only prize awarded that year, in a programme emptied by the international situation.
