The sun-baked streets and markets of ‘Cairo’ in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) — including the scene where Indiana Jones simply shoots a sword-twirling assailant — were filmed in the holy city of Kairouan in Tunisia. Its whitewashed medina, one of the oldest in the Maghreb, gave Spielberg a ready-made 1936 Egypt.
