Piazza Navona and its underground: the Stadium of Domitian
A small but richly layered corner of the Eternal City. Piazza Navona and its fountains, among them Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers and the work of his school, alongside the treasures of the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, a masterpiece by the other great protagonist of Baroque Rome, Francesco Borromini.
The visit then went back in time and down through the street levels, into the underground remains of the Stadium of Domitian — a hidden part of the city, built in the 1st century CE on the emperor’s orders. A guided tour let visitors see the square from another angle entirely: from below.
