Birth Anniversary: Pier Luigi Nervi — June 21, 1891
Pier Luigi Nervi (Sondrio, 21 June 1891 – Rome, 9 January 1979), engineer, was a master of reinforced concrete. Between the wars he built the Giovanni Berta stadium in Florence (1930–33), famous for its cantilevered canopy, its helical stairs and its Marathon tower: a work in which engineering becomes architecture. His name is attached as well to the Palazzo del Lavoro in Turin, to the canopy of the fruit and vegetable market in Bologna and to the hangars of the Orbetello seaplane base.
