Six 1930s shophouses become a gallery: Muara Arts opens in Kuala Lumpur on 1 November 2026

01 November 2026 — 04 April 2027
Muara Arts

Medan Pasar is where Kuala Lumpur began: a square at the confluence of the Klang and the Gombak, the old market ground of the city, lined with pre-war shophouses. Six of them, built in the 1930s in the Art Deco manner that the Malayan towns made their own, have been joined behind their facades into a single building of around 1,800 square metres, with museum-standard galleries put in and the historic character of the fronts kept. On 1 November 2026 they open as Muara Arts, a not-for-profit gallery for modern and contemporary art from Malaysia and the rest of South-East Asia.

The institution is the work of the Creador Foundation, founded by Shanthi Kandiah and Brahmal Vasudevan, and its artistic director is Lydia Yee, until recently chief curator at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. A performing arts theatre is to follow on the same site, with 2029 given as the date. The name means estuary — the place where a river meets the sea, which is also what the square outside has always been.

The opening exhibition, A–Z of Southeast Asian Art: A Critical Dictionary, runs until 4 April 2027 and gathers more than forty artists from across the region, working in painting, sculpture, textiles, installation, video and works on paper. The dictionary form is the argument: instead of a national survey or a chronology, a set of entries, which is a way of admitting that the region’s art history has no single thread to follow.
