Mercado/Material at Centro de Artes, San Antonio
Centro de Artes marks ten years as San Antonio’s Latino art gallery with Mercado/Material, an exhibition that takes the market as its starting point. Curated by Mia Lopez, it gathers contemporary artists who work with everyday objects — the goods, packaging and materials of commerce — and turns them into reflections on identity, labour, community and consumer culture.
The setting carries the argument. The gallery stands in Historic Market Square, the trading quarter that has been the commercial and social heart of Mexican-American San Antonio for generations; the exhibition looks at the mercado both as a place and as a way of making things.
