L’étrange cas de Monsieur Gallé — Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy

Émile Gallé (1846–1904) was a glassmaker, a cabinetmaker, a ceramicist and a botanist, a writer who took public positions, and the president of the Alliance provinciale des industries d’art, the association better known as the École de Nancy. The city that made him is giving him its exhibition of the year. L’étrange cas de Monsieur Gallé opens at the Musée des Beaux-Arts on 21 October 2026, organised together with the Musée de l’École de Nancy and recognised by the French Ministry of Culture as an exhibition of national interest.

The route is built around three words the curators use for the man: the bizarre, the meticulous and the audacious. Glass, wood and ceramic sit beside textiles, leather, drawings, notes, photographs and printed matter, including recent acquisitions of the Musée de l’École de Nancy. The argument is that nature was Gallé’s language rather than his decoration, and that the technical research behind the marquetry and the layered cameo glass was as radical as the forms.

The museum stands on place Stanislas, the square that anchors Nancy’s UNESCO listing. The exhibition runs through the winter and closes at the end of February 2027.
