Märchen, Mythen & Legenden: Art Nouveau bronzes around 1900 — Krahuletz-Museum, Eggenburg, until 29 November 2026
Photo: GuentherZ, via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 3.0 The Krahuletz-Museum in Eggenburg, in the Waldviertel of Lower Austria, is best known for its minerals, its shells and its archaeology. For the 2026 season it has set among those permanent collections a special exhibition of small Art Nouveau bronzes from around 1900, under the title Märchen, Mythen & Legenden — fairy tales, myths and legends. Bacchus and his merry followers, dragons and unicorns, elves and frog kings share the cases with fauns, satyrs, nymphs, mermaids, sphinxes and Rübezahl, the mountain spirit of the Riesengebirge.
The exhibition is the result of a collaboration with the LETTER Stiftung in Cologne. Its signature piece is Rudolf Henn‘s bronze Märchen, made before June 1905, which folds two tales into one figure: the lady with the unicorn and the princess with the frog king. Around it the museum has built a season of storytelling, with guided tours, a long night of stories and a family festival of fantasy.

Cultural Heritage Online lists this exhibition for readers who follow Jugendstil sculpture in Austria beyond Vienna. Small bronzes of this period rarely get a show of their own, and Eggenburg’s medieval town walls make the trip worthwhile in themselves.
