Identificazione delle tecniche tradizionali di stampa d’arte

A day dedicated to recognising the mark left by different plates and techniques in works of art on paper. The course covered the theory behind traditional printmaking, and participants examined original plates and prints under a videomicroscope for each technique discussed, putting theory straight into practice.

The course was aimed at connoisseurs, students and conservators of works on paper, art historians, and antiques dealers and collectors wanting to deepen their knowledge of traditional print techniques. It covered relief techniques such as woodcut and linocut; direct intaglio techniques including burin engraving, drypoint, mezzotint and pencil-manner roulette; and indirect intaglio techniques such as etching, aquatint, sugar-lift and soft-ground.

The course was led by Silvia Puteo, an art historian (a graduate of Rome’s La Sapienza University in modern art history) and a conservator of cultural heritage trained at the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro e la Conservazione del Patrimonio Archivistico e Librario, where she also teaches print-recognition and paper conservation.
