George R. Mann Is Born (1856)
On 12 July 1856 George Richard Mann was born. Trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he became the leading architect in Arkansas between 1900 and 1930 and designed the Arkansas State Capitol; his entries reached the final rounds of competitions for several other state capitols. In Little Rock his firm’s commercial work included the Wallace Building of 1928 — an early Art Deco office block on Main Street, commissioned by the former governor George Washington Donaghey — that helped carry the city into its Art Deco decade.
