Game of Thrones Season 3 — Yunkai, the Yellow City, at Aït Benhaddou

In 2013, HBO filmed the exterior siege sequences of the Yellow City Yunkai at Aït Benhaddou in Morocco. The ksar’s distinctive golden pisé towers appeared throughout Season 3 as the backdrop for Daenerys Targaryen’s campaign to liberate the slave city of the Slaver’s Bay. Aït Benhaddou’s warm-ochre walls and elevated silhouette made it the ideal stand-in for a fictional Ghiscari desert city. Scenes show the Unsullied approaching across the river plain with the ksar’s towers rising behind — the same towers and the same river crossing visible to visitors today.
