Feast of Saint Anselm of Canterbury — April 21

The feast of Saint Anselm of Canterbury, theologian and Doctor of the Church, falls on 21 April — the day he died, in 1109. Long before Canterbury he was a monk and then abbot at Le Bec, a Norman abbey he turned into one of the sharpest centres of learning in eleventh-century Europe. Two of its abbots, Lanfranc and Anselm, went on to run the English church from Canterbury; both first learned to think at Bec.
