Death Anniversary: Pietro Domenico Paradies — August 25, 1791
He died in Venice on 25 August 1791 at eighty-four years old. A pupil of Nicola Porpora in Naples, he settled in London in 1746 where he was sought after as a premier harpsichord and singing teacher; his published collection of twelve Sonate di gravicembalo of 1754, including the famous Toccata in A major, remains a cherished gem of eighteenth-century keyboard literature.
A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unrecorded in Neapolitan parish archives (c. 1707); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 25 August. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
