Death Anniversary: Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin — January 13, 1768
He died in Paris on 13 January 1768 after more than three decades as celebrated principal flautist of the Dresden Hofkapelle between 1715 and 1749. Renowned as the teacher of Johann Joachim Quantz and Johann Sebastian Bach’s brother Johann Jacob Bach, his virtuosic transverse flute concerto in E minor set the benchmark for European late baroque flute performance.
A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unrecorded in Provençal baptismal records (c. 1690); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 13 January. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
Dates verified on Dieter Härtwig, Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin: Flötenmeister am sächsischen Hof, Dresden, 1968, pp. 5-20; Sächsische Biografie authority record (https://saebi.isgv.de/biografie/Pierre-Gabriel_Buffardin_(ca._1690-1768)).
