Lewis Carroll — Charles Lutwidge Dodgson — died at Guildford on 14 January 1898. His whole adult life had unfolded at Christ Church, Oxford, where he was a student and then, from 1855 to 1881, mathematical lecturer. The quads, the hall and the river walks of Oxford are the landscape behind Wonderland, and the university he never really left still shows visitors his world.
