Death Anniversary: Giovanni Battista Pescetti — March 20, 1766

20 March 2027
Venice

He died in Venice on 20 March 1766. A pupil of Antonio Lotti, he achieved acclaim with operas for Venetian theatres before moving to London in 1736, where he directed the Opera of the Nobility in direct rivalry with Handel. His published collection of nine keyboard sonatas of 1739 stands as an inventive bridge between baroque counterpoint and galant style.

A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unrecorded in Venetian parish records (c. 1704); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 20 March. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.

Dates verified on Treccani, DBI, vol. 82 (2015), voce "PESCETTI, Giovanni Battista" (https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/giovanni-battista-pescetti_(Dizionario-Biografico)/); Grove Music Online, entry "Pescetti, Giovanni Battista" (https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.21404).
