Death Anniversary: Georg Caspar Schürmann — February 25, 1751

He died at Wolfenbüttel on 25 February 1751 after more than fifty years in the service of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Appointed court Kapellmeister in 1707, he composed over thirty operas for the Brunswick opera house, synthesising German contrapuntal texture with the lyrical vocal warmth of the Venetian style he had studied during his Italian travels.

A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unverified in seventeenth-century Lower Saxony church records (c. 1672); we commemorate his verified death date on 25 February. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.

Dates verified on Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB), vol. 23 (2007), pp. 645-646 (https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/pnd100994196.html); Gustav Schmidt, Georg Caspar Schürmann: sein Leben und sein Werk, Regensburg, Bosse, 1933, p. 14.
