Francisco Goya died in exile in Bordeaux on 16 April 1828. The paintings he made for no one but himself in his last years in Spain, the so-called Black Paintings, once covered the walls of his own house outside Madrid; taken down and moved onto canvas after his death, they now hang in the Museo del Prado alongside the Third of May 1808 and the rest of a life’s work that runs from court portraits to nightmares.
