Domenico Ghirlandaio died of plague in Florence on 11 January 1494 and was buried in Santa Maria Novella — the basilica whose main chapel he had just finished frescoing for the Tornabuoni family. His scenes slip the faces and interiors of contemporary Florence into sacred history, and remain the best census of the city’s Renaissance features. The painter rests inside his own masterpiece.
