Paul Cézanne was born in Aix-en-Provence on 19 January 1839, in a house on the rue de l’Opéra. He spent a lifetime returning from Paris to paint the same Provençal motifs — Mont Sainte-Victoire above all — until painting itself changed shape around him. The Musée d’Orsay holds defining canvases of his, from the card players to the bathers: the bridge between Impressionism and everything after.
