Birth Anniversary: Max Neufeld — February 3, 1887

Guntersdorf

Max Neufeld was born at Guntersdorf, in Lower Austria, in February 1887. Of Jewish origin, he left Germany for Italy when the Nazis came to power — Treccani’s phrase is that he moved to «the more tolerant Italy» for racial reasons. In 1939, a year after Italy had passed racial laws of its own, he directed Mille lire al mese, the comedy the same encyclopedia calls the symbol and the manifesto of a country that wanted a modest, quiet life rather than heroism.

A note on this date. The day of birth is not settled: Treccani gives 3 February 1887, other records give 13 February. We have followed Treccani, and the month and year are agreed. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.

Dates verified on Treccani, Enciclopedia del Cinema; the Library of Congress Name Authority File, which gives 1887-1967.
