Birth Anniversary: Maria Cebotari — February 10, 1910

Maria Cebotari was born at Chișinău, then in Bessarabia, in 1910. She became one of the leading sopranos of the German-speaking stages of the 1930s and 1940s, and also worked in film: in 1942 she sang in Odessa in fiamme, directed by Carmine Gallone and the first picture made under the co-production agreement between Italian and Romanian cinema. Gallone put an aria from Tosca into the middle of a bombing scene for her.
