Franz Liszt was born on 22 October 1811 in Raiding, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary. He became the century’s most famous pianist before he had turned thirty, and spent the rest of his life turning that fame into orchestras, academies and pupils across three cities. The Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum in Budapest, set in the apartment where he lived and taught in his final years, keeps his pianos and manuscripts under one roof.
