Claude Monet was born in Paris on 14 November 1840. Between 1892 and 1894 he worked on more than thirty canvases of a single building, Rouen Cathedral, painting from a rented room across the square and returning to the same view at dawn, at noon, in fog, in full sun — the facade dissolving a little more with every canvas. The cathedral he obsessed over is unchanged; the paintings changed how painting saw stone.
