Charles I was born at Dunfermline Palace, Fife, on 19 November 1600 — the last monarch born in Scotland. The palace stands in ruin beside Dunfermline Abbey, itself the burial place of Robert the Bruce; father and son, in different centuries, both left the town for thrones that ended badly. Charles’s own reign closed on the scaffold in 1649, a fact the ruined palace where it began says nothing about, and everything.
