Carlo Guzzi was born in Milan on 4 November 1889, the second of four children of Palamede Guzzi, an engineer. His father’s sudden death in October 1906 forced him to give up his studies at a technical institute. During the First World War he served as a motor mechanic, and it was there that he met the much-decorated airman Giorgio Parodi, with whom he would found the motorcycle works that carried his name.
