On 26 November 1922, Howard Carter chipped a hole through a sealed doorway deep in the Valley of the Kings and held a candle to the gap. Behind him, Lord Carnarvon asked if he could see anything. “Yes,” Carter answered, “wonderful things.” The treasures that came out of that chamber over the following months now fill room after room of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo — the fullest royal burial ever found intact, seen first by candlelight through a hole the width of a hand.
