On the morning of 20 June 1837, at Kensington Palace, the eighteen-year-old Princess Victoria was woken to be told that her uncle, King William IV, had died in the night and that she was now queen. She had been born in the same palace and grown up inside it, watched over so closely her whole childhood that she had rarely been left alone in a room — until that morning, when she asked to receive the news by herself.
