Julius Caesar was stabbed to death on the Ides of March, 44 BC, at a meeting of the Senate held in the Curia of Pompey — a hall built into the vast theatre complex Pompey had raised decades earlier, the man Caesar had once fought a civil war against. The remains of that hall sit today beneath Largo di Torre Argentina, a square better known now for its cats than for the murder that changed the shape of Rome.
