Anniversary: Octavian Becomes Augustus — January 16, 27 BC

On 16 January 27 BC the Roman Senate conferred on Octavian the title Augustus, the name under which he would rebuild Rome in marble. Days earlier he had formally returned his powers to Senate and people; the new name sealed the settlement that turned a republic into a principate. The Ara Pacis, the altar of Augustan peace, remains the clearest statement in stone of what the title came to mean.
