Anniversary: Stefanutti’s SS.2 in the Luce Newsreels — April 15, 1936
On 15 April 1936 the Giornale Luce B0866 presented to the Italian public the SS.2 motor-glider, the first Italian aircraft in canard configuration, conceived and built by the engineer Sergio Stefanutti, a captain of the Air Force engineering corps, at the experimental centre of Guidonia. Rudders on the swept-back wings, elevator at the nose, a motorcycle engine: the newsreel dwells on its steady handling and its complete visibility. From that experiment the canard configuration would reach modern fighters, and Stefanutti the first Italian jet to pass the sound barrier. Every 15 April the SS.2 makes its two-minute flight again.
