Birth Anniversary: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec — November 24, 1864
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born at Albi on 24 November 1864, into an old aristocratic family. Marked from boyhood by an illness that stopped his growth, he made the Montmartre of the cafés and theatres his world. With the posters for the Moulin Rouge and the stars of the music hall he raised lithography to a major art, fixing movement and character in a few lines and flat fields of colour. His graphic language is a close cousin of Art Nouveau. The anniversary marks the brilliant chronicler of Paris by night.
