Death Anniversary: Émile Gallé — September 23, 1904
Photo: Wikimedia Commons Émile Gallé died at Nancy on 23 September 1904, three years after founding the École de Nancy, the alliance of artists and art industries that made the city a capital of Art Nouveau. His glass and furniture, shown at the great international exhibitions, had imposed a naturalistic taste that defined an age. The workshops carried on after him, but without his inventive hand. The anniversary marks that legacy, from the cameo vases to the inlaid furniture, today among the most sought-after pieces of the art of 1900.
