Amédée Couder, dessinateur sur étoffes — the exhibition at the Musée de la Toile de Jouy, Jouy-en-Josas, until 10 January 2027

Amédée Couder (1800–1864) drew patterns for the cotton-printing manufactories of the early nineteenth century, among them the Oberkampf manufactory at Jouy-en-Josas, at the moment when French industry was expanding. He is known for having transposed the woven palmettes and boteh motifs of cashmere shawls, the height of fashion in his day, into designs for printing on cloth. He also founded a studio that created patterns for the textile and decorative industries and employed many artists, which makes him one of the first pattern designers to work independently and sell his services to manufacturers, a role that still shapes textile design and ornament today.

The Musée de la Toile de Jouy, the municipal museum of the printed cottons made at Jouy from 1760 to 1843, devotes its exhibition of 2026–27 to him. Amédée Couder, dessinateur sur étoffes. Aux sources du design textile au 19e siècle brings together more than fifty textile, graphic and technical works and archive documents, sets Couder’s designs beside those of other industrial designers of his time, and shows the relationships all of them kept with the Parisian printing houses of the nineteenth century.
