Gustave Fayet: decorative symphony at Fontfroide – the abbey the collector remade, to 17 January 2027

18 April 2026 — 17 January 2027
Abbaye de Fontfroide

Fontfroide is a Cistercian abbey outside Narbonne that owes its survival to a collector. In the early twentieth century Gustave Fayet — painter, patron, and one of the first people in France to buy Van Gogh and Gauguin — took on the buildings and made them a place where art was commissioned rather than merely stored. From 18 April 2026 to 17 January 2027 the abbey shows Gustave Fayet : symphonie décorative à Fontfroide, curated by Elodie Baillot and Céline Ventura Teixera, on exactly that work.

It runs alongside a second display, Gustave Fayet, l’esprit d’entreprise, open from 15 December 2025 to 29 November 2026, which follows the other half of the man: the viticulture he modernised, the wine-making buildings he rebuilt, and his Belle Époque investments in railways, banking and mining. Read together the two shows make the point that the patron and the businessman were the same person, and that the abbey as a visitor sees it today is the result.

The timing is not accidental for anyone following Fayet this season. The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris opened Gustave Fayet, Collectionneur – Créateur. Icônes de l’art moderne on 9 October 2026, running to 8 March 2027, and the Museon Arlaten in Arles has given him a season of its own. Fontfroide is where the collection was actually assembled and where the decorative commissions remain in place, which makes it the one stop on that trail that is also a building.
