Photo: Wikimedia Commons Émile Gallé was born at Nancy on 8 May 1846. Master glassmaker, ceramicist and cabinetmaker, he is the soul of the École de Nancy, the great French chapter of Art Nouveau. Out of his workshops came layered and etched cameo glass, vases and furniture covered in flowers, insects and stems studied from life with an almost botanical eye. For Gallé nature was not ornament but structure: every object tells a metamorphosis. The anniversary marks the artist who turned French decorative art into a language of natural poetry.
