Palazzo Capua – Sarno Archaeological Museum

An eighteenth-century palace houses archaeological finds spanning from prehistory to the medieval period, with exceptional Hellenistic funerary reconstructions from the Sarno Valley.

At a glance

Palazzo Capua occupies a commanding position in central Sarno and serves as the setting for the museum’s carefully arranged collections. The first-floor galleries present material from systematic excavations conducted across the Sarno Valley, one of southern Italy’s archaeologically rich landscapes.

History

The museum was established within the walls of the eighteenth-century Palazzo Capua and reopened in a new arrangement on 1 July 2011. This redesign allowed curators to present the valley’s archaeological heritage with improved context and visibility.

What you see

The palace itself represents eighteenth-century Campanian domestic architecture. Within, the museum displays funerary items from local necropolises spanning centuries. Particularly striking are the reconstructions of Hellenistic box tombs from the second half of the 4th century BC, discovered at Galitta del Capitano. These tombs retain admirably preserved funerary paintings depicting scenes such as the return of the warrior being welcomed by family members.

Cultural significance

The Sarno Valley collection illuminates daily life, burial practices, and artistic traditions from multiple periods in southern Italy’s past. The painted tombs provide rare visual testimony to Hellenistic family relationships and warrior culture, offering insights impossible to glean from pottery or tools alone.
