The Couven Museum is a museum in the city centre of Aachen, western Germany. It has been housed since 1958 in the Monheim house, a 17th-century pharmacy that was redesigned by the architect Jakob Couven in 1786. The museum displays period rooms in Directoire, Empire and Biedermeier styles, as well as the historic pharmacy, kitchen and a collection of faience tiles.
At a glance
The building was begun in 1662 by the pharmacist Adam Coebergh, who established the Adler-Apotheke there. After Andreas Monheim acquired it in 1783, he had it redesigned by Jakob Couven in 1786. The city of Aachen bought the house in 1951, and the Couven Museum opened there in 1958. Its interiors present furniture, fireplaces, paintings, porcelain and silver in period-room ensembles.
