Holy Name of Mary Pro-Cathedral

The oldest parish and oldest cathedral in Michigan, born from a 1668 Jesuit mission on the St. Marys River.

At a glance

Holy Name of Mary Pro-Cathedral, also called St. Mary Proto-Cathedral, is a Catholic parish church in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It served as the first cathedral of the Diocese of Marquette. The present brick building is the fifth church raised by this congregation. Its story reaches back to a Jesuit mission founded more than two centuries before the current walls went up.

History

The parish began in 1668 as a Jesuit mission. No other parish in the state can claim an earlier start. Nationally, only the parishes in St. Augustine, Florida, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, are older. The mission grew into a settled congregation at the edge of the Great Lakes.

The church that stands today dates from 1881. It is the congregation’s fifth building. In the years before that, fire, time, and the needs of a growing community replaced each earlier structure. In 1984 the church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Five years later, in 1989, Michigan named it a state historic site.

What you see

The 1881 church is the building visitors enter today. Its age as a structure is modest compared with the parish it houses. The sources do not describe its style, materials, or interior detail. What they make clear is that this is a working parish church, not a museum piece. It has remained the center of Catholic life in Sault Ste. Marie for well over a century.

Cultural significance

Holy Name of Mary holds a singular place in Michigan’s religious history. It was the first cathedral of the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie, the predecessor of the Diocese of Marquette. That title passed on when the see moved, leaving the church to serve as a pro-cathedral. The parish itself is the third-oldest Catholic parish in the United States. These distinctions rest on the date 1668 and on the unbroken line of worship that followed.
