Death Anniversary: Christoph Schaffrath — February 17, 1763
He died in Berlin on 17 February 1763. Born in Saxony around 1709, he served Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia at Ruppin and Rheinsberg from 1734 and was appointed harpsichordist to Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia in 1741, leaving an admired catalogue of overtures, symphonies, and keyboard sonatas that epitomize the refined Berlin empfindsamer Stil.
A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unrecorded in Saxon registers (c. 1709); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 17 February. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
Dates verified on Christoph Henzel, Die Musikaliensammlung der Prinzessin Anna Amalia von Preußen, ortus musikverlag, 2003; Grove Music Online, entry "Schaffrath, Christoph" (https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.24748).
