Birth Anniversary: Ignazio Gerusalemme — June 3, 1707
Born at Lecce in southern Italy on 3 June 1707. After serving as a violinist in Naples and theatrical director at the Real Coliseo del Buen Retiro in Cadiz, he accepted an invitation in 1742 to move to New Spain, where he was appointed maestro de capilla of Mexico City Cathedral in 1749.
A note on this date. The exact day of death in Mexico City is unrecorded in municipal archives (1769); we celebrate his verified birth anniversary on 3 June. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
Dates verified on Craig H. Russell, From Serra to Sancho: Music and Pageantry in California Culture, Oxford University Press, 2009; Grove Music Online, entry "Jerúsalem, Ignacio" (https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.14275).
